Psyllium
These studies suggest that psyllium may modify the response to rapidly fermentable, poorly absorbed dietary carbohydrates such as lactose, fructose, and sorbitol, which have been implicated in some studies of irritable bowel syndrome 3133 ; . The well-recognized benefit of psyllium in irritable bowel syndrome 6, 34, 35 ; is partly due to its treatment of constipation 6 ; , but psyllium also benefits those with diarrhea and pain 7, 34 ; . The possibility that psyllium benefits those with occult carbohydrate intolerance is worthy of further study. These effects of psyllium should not be taken as a recommendation to include psyllium as part of a normal diet. Similar gelling agents are found more economically in fresh fruit and vegetables. Adjusting the intake of fibre, carbohydrate and fats in the diet is a simple and sometimes effective intervention in IBS. Effects of changes in the diet may be delayed for one to five days, or longer if the patient has constipation. Alterations in fibre intake needs careful management The majority of therapeutic trials in secondary care examining the effect of fibre in the diet do not show much benefit. Cereal fibre may make the majority of patients worse. Soluble fibres, such as psyllium Mucilax, Konsyl D ; and ispaghula can be better. In primary care, it is worthwhile trialling soluble fibres for patients in whom it seems to be indicated, but reducing or stopping them if there is no improvement. Some patients will need to be cautioned against excessive fibre intake. Alterations in carbohydrate intake Lactose and fructose intolerance have been associated with IBS-like symptoms. Reliance on history and trials of low intakes of either lactose or fructose may give the diagnosis. However, there appears to be little difference between the prevalence of carbohydrate intolerance in people with IBS and the general population. Alteration in fat intake often helps Fat in the gut can induce flatulence and bloating and people with IBS are often particularly aware of this because of their visceral hypersensitivity. It is often worth decreasing the fat intake. Cognitive behaviour therapy Studies suggest that cognitive behaviour therapy helps people with IBS cope with their symptoms but does not relieve the symptoms themselves.

Re: Taking psyllium fiber every day harmful? least 2 hours after the final meal of they day, along with whatever supplements he is going to take. I see more health benefits in taking soluble fiber right before the meals. How so? Less calorie absorption is all I can think of. Several reasons: it reduces the glycemic index load of whatever you eat; it traps toxins, fat and even cholesterol released into the bowels; it helps one feel fuller for longer periods of time. Good points. Personally, I like a good load of greens instead. Brocolli, cauliflower, baby spinach, swiss chard, bok choy, bean sprouts, celery, that sort of thing. That is the ideal situation. Thing is, with very few exceptions, I simply can't tolerate vegetables. An enema doesn't cause me as much displeasure. That's why I have a heard time accepting the notion that humans are naturally vegans. How can I be naturally a vegan if I feel so much displeasure eating vegetables? IBS can be caused by a sensitivity to too much Cellulose. Try mushrooms. Their cell walls are chitin instead of cellulose so you may tolerate that better. I can't handle RAW veggies at all. Makes me deathly ill, and I have to watch the volume if the higher fiber stuff such as brocolli. By the way, all the soluble fiber on those veget5ables is going to have the exact some effect on the fat-soluble supplements. Most veggies are not soluble fiber. : - ; That's generally reserved to specific grains. Psyllium and oat bran are two that I know for sure, there are probably others. Cheers! -- Om. School districts need to know the prevalence in their schools of children and adolescents with special health care needs. The school system should conduct a health needs assessment to evaluate the number and type of students with special health care needs in the school population each year. Appropriate services can be planned and implemented with this information. This school assessment should include all children with special health care needs and not be limited solely to those requiring special education services and or Individualized Education Plans IEPs ; through IDEA. The student health needs assessment forms the basis for development of the health service program, and serves to identify students in need of individualized care planning. When a student has a healthrelated condition, a health assessment should be conducted by a healthcare provider and reviewed by the school nurse. Based on this assessment, the school nurse identifies those and questran.

Although dietary supplement regulations require that we list psyllium fiber as part of the carbohydrate total, it is, in fact, very different from carbohydrates such as sugar, glucose, fruit sugar, corn syrups, and starches.

The scientists found that under the double-CO2 climate scenario, an additional 114 escaped fires per year could be anticipated, in addition to the 110 escaped fires under current climate. If the average escaped fire size remained the same, average annual burned area would increase to roughly 4 percent of the region, up from 2 percent under the present climate. This increase is equivalent to halving the average fire-return interval, or expected number of years between fires, from 50 to 25 years. This reduction in the fire-return interval could have serious landscape implications, including increased landslides, flooding, erosion, and water-quality impairment. In California, the majority of sediment entering streams does so after fires, meaning that shorter intervals between fires could affect the quality of stream habitats, degrade water quality, and increase dam siltation and potential flood severity. Findings from this study were part of the basis for a new California law that imposes CO2 emissions requirements for sport utility vehicles sold in the state. Findings also were reported to the State of California Energy Commission and the California.

Porosis in knee OA 810 ; , confirming earlier observations of periarticular osteoporosis in some patients 11 ; . Subchondral bone lesions, which are seen by magnetic resonance imaging MRI ; in many patients with OA, may represent histologic microfractures 1214 ; . In the Duncan-Hartley guinea pig model of spontaneous OA, subchondral bony changes are a characteristic of the disease process 15 ; , and risedronate inhibited histologic disease progression, with a 3040% reduction in cartilage damage 1618 ; . Bisphosphonates have also been effective in slowing disease progression in other animal models of OA 19, 20 ; . Agents that suppress bone turnover, including bisphosphonates, have been associated with fewer subchondral bony lesions as visualized by MRI ; in patients with OA 21 such lesions are independently correlated with levels of pain and disease progression 22 ; . Levels of bone turnover markers are higher in patients with progressive OA and are similar to those in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis 23 ; . Data from trials of patients with Paget's disease indicated that short treatment courses of higher-dosage risedronate 30 mg day ; improved bone lesions, reduced biochemical indices of disease activity 24 ; , and reduced bone pain 2527 ; . In a 1-year study, 285 patients with knee OA received risedronate at a dosage of 5 mg day, risedronate at a dosage of 15 mg day, or placebo 28 ; . A consistent trend for pain reduction with the highest dosage of risedronate was observed at 6 months, and a consistent trend for statistically significantly different responses in patient global assessment of disease PGA ; scores was observed at 1 year. Although these differences suggested a possible benefit in retarding radiographic progression, with 1% of patients in the group receiving risedronate at a dosage of 15 mg day showing disease progression 0.75-mm joint space loss ; over 1 year compared with 8% of patients in the placebo group, the differences were not statistically significant. A dose-dependent reduction in the level of urinary C-terminal crosslinking telopeptide of type II collagen CTX-II ; was also observed in that study. Thus, there is rationale for suggesting that a bisphosphonate, potentially acting to inhibit bone turnover, may have a role in the treatment of OA. Risedronate, a pyridinyl bisphosphonate that decreases bone resorption and turnover, is efficacious for postmenopausal and corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis and, in higher doses, for Paget's disease of bone 26, 27, 29, ; . We explored the efficacy of risedronate, in a range of doses, in knee OA and psyllium.
| Psyllium dosingManuscript received October 19, 1993 Accepted for publication January 24, 1994 ABSTRACT Nonrandom associations between alleles at different loci can be tested for using Fisher's exact test. Extensive simulations show that there is a substantial probability of obtaining significant nonrandom associations between closely or completely linked polymorphic neutral loci ina population of constant size at equilibrium under mutation and genetic In a rapidly growing population, however, there will drift. be little chanceof finding significant nonrandom associations even between completely linkedthe loci if growth has been sufficiently rapid. This result is illustratedanalysis of mitochondrialDNA sequence by the data from humans. comparingall pairs of informative In sites, fewer than5% of the pairs show significant disequilibrium in Sardinians, which have apparently undergone rapid population growth, while 20% to 30% in !Kung and Pygmies, which apparently have not undergone rapid growth, show significance. The extent of linkage disequilibrium in a population is closely related to the gene genealogies of the loci examined, with "starlike" genealogies making significant linkage disequilibrium unlikely. INKAGE disequilibrium is the termmost commonly used to describe the nonrandom association of alleles at different loci LEWONTIN KOJIMA and 1960 ; , although "gametic disequilibrium" or "gametic phase disequilibrium" are used for thesame purpose. Linkage disequilibrium or the equivalent terms are, however, used in twoways that are related but still differ. The coefficient of linkage disequilibrium, usually denoted by D, is the difference between the observed frequency of a gametic type and thefrequency expectedon the basis of random associations of alleles in gametes LEWONTIN and KOJIMA 1960 ; . This quantity arises naturally in dynamic equations describingthe evolution of gamete frequencies under various selection models KIMURA 1956 ; . Larger absolute ; values of indicate that there more D is linkage disequilibrium in a population. There are numerous other measures of linkage disequilibrium but they usually differ from D only by a normalizing factor. Although the term has been used for more than years, 30 there is still considerable controversy over the best or most useful measure of the extent of linkage disequilibrium HEDRICK 1987; LEWONTIN 1988 ; . The second use of the term linkage disequilibrium is in the sense of statistical significance. In this usage, there is linkage disequilibrium between two loci if a statistical test shows that there is significant nonrandom association between alleles at two loci. Both the chi-square test and the Fisher's exact test can be used on the contingency table made up of gametic types WEIR 1990, Ch. 3 ; . Although the chi-square test has been themost commonly employed because of its computational simplicity, the recent development rapid algorithms for perof forming Fisher's exact test and Monte Carlo methods for approximating the results from the exact test make the and rapamune.
